Area Guide
Islington packs a lot into a small, busy borough, and a move here is rarely as simple as pulling up outside. We work across N1, N5 and N7, into EC1 around Clerkenwell, and along the fringes into N4 and N19, so we know how each part behaves on the day.
Around Angel and Upper Street you are dealing with period flats above shops, one way systems and constant footfall. Barnsbury and Canonbury are Georgian and Victorian terraces, often with narrow hallways, tight staircases and no lift. Clerkenwell (EC1) is warehouse conversions and loft apartments, where the real job is the access, the service lift and booking a loading slot, not the distance. Highbury sits next to the Emirates Stadium, so timing a move around a match day matters. Holloway, Finsbury Park and the Tollington side are a mix of family houses and converted flats, busier and more parking sensitive than they first look.
Getting Around
Transport shapes everything. The Northern line runs through Angel, the Victoria line through Highbury and Islington, and Overground and mainline services thread through Caledonian Road and Barnsbury, Highbury and Drayton Park. On the road you are on the A1 along Upper Street and Holloway Road, with York Way and Caledonian Road carrying much of the north to south traffic. All of it is manageable, but it takes planning, not luck.
Local spots you will know: Chapel Market and the Business Design Centre by Angel, Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, Sadler's Wells, the Union Chapel and Highbury Fields. We mention them because they tell us where the pinch points are, the narrow streets, the market days and the event traffic a mover needs to plan around.
The Islington Differentiator
This is where most Islington moves go wrong, and where a bit of planning saves you money. Almost all of the borough is a controlled parking zone, so you cannot simply leave a removals van outside for the day.
For a proper move you want a suspended parking bay directly outside. In Islington that is booked through the council, and you need to apply about two weeks ahead. They ask for roughly 14 days of notice and post advance warning notices on the street around 10 days before, so it is not something to leave until the week of the move. The upside for a house move is that Islington does not charge domestic customers for the bay suspension itself, so here it is the notice period, not the cost, that catches people out. We tell you where the bay needs to go and how to arrange it, and we plan the crew and the van around it. See our parking suspension guide for the notice period and cost in every London borough.
Watch the main roads. Upper Street and Holloway Road (the A1) carry loading and stopping restrictions at peak times, so a move that ignores them risks a fine or a very long carry to the door. Side streets around Angel and Barnsbury are permit zones with limited space, and many of the period conversions have no lift, narrow Victorian staircases and shared entrances that slow a move down when nobody has planned for them.
None of this is a problem when it is thought through. We check the access at both ends before the day, so the crew, the van size and the timing fit the street rather than fighting it.
